Big Hair, Big Bangs
Everybody remembers it. They don’t want to but they can’t help it. The ginormous big bangs of the 80s exemplified the hairstyles of that decade. The bigger and more ridiculous the better. Girls would spend hours every morning teasing up their bangs as high as they could get them. It all started with the Hair Bands, glam rock groups with huge permed ‘dos like Motley Crue, Cinderella, Poison and Quiet Riot to name a few. They made it popular for both men and women to sport the big hair the 80s were known for. It quickly caught on and swept through Junior High and High Schools everywhere. It took a ton of gel, hair spray, mousse and teasing to achieve these voluminous ‘dos, but it was a ritual practiced by many a teenage girl during the 80s. Just flip through any yearbook from the 80s and you’ll see it everywhere, students and teachers alike!
It didn’t stop at the schools either. Head down to your nearest shopping mall and you would find a never ending supply of “mall bangs” hanging around. Thankfully, much like slap bracelets, Swatch watches and acid washed jeans the big hair eventually went the way of the dodo. Although many of the 80s fashions are making a small comeback in the late 2000s, the big hair hasn’t regained it’s popularity… Yet.
